Placebase has unveiled a service called Pushpin LE which seems to be a Google Maps clone without the Google logo. Thanks to ProgrammableWeb.com for this tidbit.

Trading on the uncertainty of dealing with Google Maps' API, Placebase thinks they can provide a fee-based service. I guess it was only a matter of time. I doubt if Placebase is the only one cloning the Google API. This raises the interesting question of whether the Google Maps API will become a de facto standard?

Coincidentally, Google Maps has released Version 2 of their API

There's no online demo that I could find to provide a visual comparison between Placebase and Google Maps. I bet Google has more imagery.

Allan,

I interviewed the Placebase folks (who are making this announcement at our conference in San Fran this week). I've got details on their data and data plans.
